- ➤ InvestBev has partnered with a global asset manager to invest up to $100 million in Kentucky bourbon barrels under five years old and will hold them until they mature—this move shows strong confidence in the bourbon market and aims to support long-term stability in the spirits industry. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A nonprofit that champions church and state separation says a Kentucky public school teacher is giving students religious assignments, which has prompted questions about classroom boundaries. WKYT
- ➤ Kentucky Student Success Collaborative, an initiative of the Council on Postsecondary Education, released a statewide plan to support college students' mental health after a survey of more than 3,600 students showed many felt depressed and anxious + almost half did not seek help. The plan, developed with the Jed Foundation and postsecondary institutions, lists eight key recommendations including removing barriers to care and strengthening campus coordination. The Lane Report
- ➤ Ten preschoolers in Lexington were awarded scholarships through the Kentucky Educational Savings Plan Trust on Thursday—each child received an initial $250 deposit into a KY Saves 529 account with more funds available as they progress through Fayette County Public Schools. The awards ceremony took place at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School as part of the Bluegrass Bright Start initiative. ABC 36
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Attorney General Russell Coleman and PSC Chair Angie Hatton filed a complaint with FERC against American Electric Power and Kentucky Power for forcing Kentucky customers to pay for utility projects out-of-state. The complaint says that consumers have the state’s highest rates and subsidized 66 million dollars for projects outside our state between 2017 and 2022—claims that the companies dispute. - ➤ The Kentucky Senate passed House Bill 4, which stops public universities from using race, color, sex, religion or national origin in admissions, scholarships or hiring—Senators noted the rule also bans race-based financial aid. The bill now moves to the governor’s desk for final approval. WUKY
- ➤ The Kentucky Senate passed House Bill 4 banning diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at public colleges with a 32-6 vote, and the bill now heads to Governor Beshear for review. If passed, colleges must remove DEI offices and related programs by June 30, and a student at Eastern Kentucky University said the change feels like a heavy blow (a shot to the chest) for inclusivity.
