COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wolfe County Search and Rescue urged hikers to prepare by researching trail lengths, carrying food and proper footwear, and staying on marked paths—advice the team said can help prevent falls as warm weather draws more visitors. The team also trained new volunteers to improve response times and had completed eight rescues so far—one rescue earlier this week involved a hiker sliding down a slope.  WKYT

CRIME NEWS

  • Lexington Police are investigating a shooting after a man went to a hospital Sunday, March 23 with a gunshot wound that is not life-threatening—he did not help investigators and police have not learned when the shooting happened or who is responsible.  WKYT
  • A Fayette County Public Schools employee, 42-year-old William Lyle, was arrested on Friday for six counts of possessing matter portraying sexual performance of a minor under 12—FCPS placed him on administrative leave while Lexington police continue their investigation.  ABC 36

CULTURE NEWS

  • Elizabeth King from Georgetown was crowned as the 2025 Kentucky Derby Festival Queen at the 67th annual Fillies Derby Ball. She is a senior at the University of Kentucky studying Finance and Flute Performance (and a Gatton College of Business Ambassador) who will join the Royal Court and attend nearly all festival events this year.  LEX 18

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ally Vallandingham, co-owner of Stepping Stone Farm in Bourbon County, said federal cuts to the Local Food for Schools Program and the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement are putting her farm at risk—she warned that losing these funds may force layoffs as schools and food banks shift to wholesalers. The USDA said its approach to nutrition programs will now reflect the end of the covid era.  WKYT

SPORTS NEWS

  • In the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the 3-seeded Kentucky Wildcats beat the 6-seeded Illinois 84-75 on Sunday night at Fiserv Forum, marking their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2019. Senior guard Koby Brea led with 23 points—Kentucky will face two-seed Tennessee next at Lucas Oil Stadium on March 28.  WKYT
  • On Sunday, March 23rd, Kentucky lost to Kansas State 80-79 in overtime at Historic Memorial Coliseum during the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament—Kansas State’s final three clinched the win. Clara Strack led Kentucky with 22 points as the game saw several close lead changes.  WUKY
