COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Vaughn P. Drake Jr.—believed to be the oldest Pearl Harbor survivor and an Army engineer who was 23 during the attack—died at 106. He witnessed the Battle of Saipan and will have a military burial at Winchester Cemetery on April 17.  WKYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • During Dual Credit Week, KCTCS reported that more than 36,000 high school students enrolled in dual credit courses for the 2023–24 academic year—a 12.5% increase over last year—and that over 29,000 students saved nearly $15 million by taking classes in Fall 2024. The college system said these programs let students earn both high school and college credit while now representing about one-third of its annual enrollment.  The Lane Report

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Following last week’s floods, Lexington homeowners are warned by the Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet to watch out for scammers who promise insurance coverage and charge high fees for services such as tree removal—warned Commissioner Sharon Clark. Homeowners are urged to verify any contract details with their insurance agent before agreeing to any work.  WKYT
  • Governor Beshear said the state moved from the emergency phase to the stabilization phase after flood damage in central and north-central Kentucky—residents cleaned up and assessed damage while dangerous conditions persisted in Western Kentucky. He warned drivers to avoid flooded roads and follow barricades as officials continued their work.  WUKY
  • Last Thursday, the Planning Commission approved the ministerial review of HB 443 ZOTA and sent it to Council for further consideration—changing drive-thru rules and public comment procedures. Council’s General Government and Planning Committee will review the plan at its May 6 meeting as the amendment prepares to take effect on July 1.  CivicLex

HEALTH NEWS

  • Assistant professor Jacqueline Seals of the UK College of Public Health explained that while floodwaters have receded over the past week, cleanup continues and many affected residents still face long-term mental health challenges—heightened anxiety and thoughts of suicide have been noted. She warned that once cleanup efforts slow, ongoing support for these communities will be essential.  LEX 18

  • Lexington Catholic announced David Clark as its new head football coach on Monday afternoon. Clark spent 27 years at Bardstown High School leading teams to multiple titles—he succeeds former head coach Nick Baisch and will build on the program's storied tradition.  ABC 36
