COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Crossroads Elementary in Bath County is set to host the annual summer camp for people with disabilities where participants will take part in arts, crafts, and fun field trips during the summer. Katelyn Harvey, president of Special Needs Camp of Kentucky, said the camp will bring together individuals from Bath, Rowan, Montgomery, Cynthiana, and Louisville — offering them experiences they do not usually have.  LEX 18
  • Fifty-nine Kentucky veterans took an honor flight to Washington D.C. on Saturday to see a memorial built in their honor. They returned to Blue Grass Airport where hundreds applauded them + several veterans were awarded special medals.  WKYT

CRIME NEWS

  • A 29-year-old man was arrested Friday in Lexington after he allegedly set his ex-girlfriend’s apartment on fire—court documents noted that the incident followed threatening text messages.  FOX 56
  • Lexington police say someone was robbed at knifepoint at the Sportsman Motel on Winchester Road just after 3 p.m. Saturday—no injuries were reported and no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.  ABC 36

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sunday, Lexington Catholics attended a mass that welcomed Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, with local church leaders saying he promises to build on Pope Francis’s legacy of inclusion. Faithful voices like Shawn Hunter and Father Jim Sichko believe the new pontiff will serve as a bridge-maker—uniting believers and supporting marginalized groups.  WKYT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A UK seismologist explained that two earthquakes—one day apart—occurred in Kentucky and said natural shifts underground likely caused the tremors. Experts will continue to monitor the activity to better understand the region’s seismic behavior.  WKYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At last Thursday’s Council Committee meeting, Hal Baillie introduced the first draft of the Lexington Preservation and Growth Management Program to set a new process for changing the Urban Service Boundary. Planning staff and council members will work over the summer — they will gather data from local and national sources — with a Public Input Session on May 22nd at Lexington Senior Center and an updated draft to be reviewed on September 9th.  CivicLex
