ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A car crashed into a tree on Keeneland Boulevard and Versailles Road late Sunday night, leaving one person with life-threatening injuries — police took the injured person to a local hospital and are investigating the cause. LEX 18
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A man was hospitalized after a shooting on Given Avenue late Sunday night—police say all parties have been identified though no arrests have been made. ABC 36
- ➤ Lexington Police reported a shooting on Given Avenue Sunday night around 11:45 p.m.—the victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and one person was detained with charges pending. ABC 36
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A 2.8 magnitude earthquake hit Garrard County near High Bridge over the weekend — its depth reaching nearly 20 miles — which seismologist Dr. Seth Carpenter said is unusual for our area, marking the first quake in over 7 years and offering key data for hazard studies. LEX 18
- ➤ Periodical cicadas are emerging after 17 years underground in Lexington and residents may soon hear them, which one expert said sounds like jet engines. University of Kentucky entomologist Blake Newtown explained that these cicadas are black with red eyes (unlike the dark green annual cicadas) and that they may harm small trees when they lay eggs in twigs. - ➤ Mayor Linda Gorton honored local law enforcement on Monday morning as National Police Week began in Lexington when she read the official proclamation and urged residents to thank officers—Chief Lawrence Weather and other leaders remembered fallen officers and stressed that community efforts keep everyone safe. - ➤ Officials said Avenue of Champions on the University of Kentucky campus has been closed 24 hours daily from May 12 to May 19 for construction aimed at preventing long-term road damage—drivers are advised to take detours on Rose Street, East High Street, or South Upper Street. WKYT
- ➤ Dr. Crystal Miller has been named Lexington-Fayette County’s Commissioner of Health, replacing Dr. Steve Davis who served as interim since October 2024. A native of Lexington with nearly 20 years at WEDCO — she earned her degrees at the University of Kentucky and will now lead LFCHD’s public health work. LEX 18

- ➤ Dr. Crystal Miller, who has nearly 18 years of experience at the WEDCO District Health Department, has been named the new Lexington-Fayette health commissioner after a multi-year search—she will replace interim commissioner Dr. Steve Davis. WKYT

- ➤ Sovereignty and jockey Junior Alvarado won the Kentucky Derby on May 3 at Churchill Downs—a homebred win from Jonabell Farm with roots dating back decades. The Derby winner will rest and miss the Preakness on May 17 before running in the Belmont Stakes on June 7—a trainer said he is building up the horse's fitness. ABC 36
