ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A tornado struck Laurel County at 11:49 p.m. on May 16, killing at least nine people—Governor Beshear said the death toll has risen to 14—and emergency crews from local, state and federal agencies are still searching for survivors and assessing damage along major roads with Keavy Road near Wyan Pine Elementary School closed until 2 p.m. ABC 36
- ➤ A Lexington firetruck was involved in a crash near the intersection of New Circle and Russell Cave shortly after 1 p.m. on May 17 (police reported the truck had its lights and sirens on when hit by a passenger vehicle and the driver was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, with no injury on the firetruck). CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A suspect wanted in Scott County was arrested in Lexington Saturday afternoon — he ran from officers during a traffic stop, left his vehicle, and fled on foot before police charged him with fleeing or evading police 1st degree, fleeing or evading police 2nd degree and reckless driving. WKYT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lexington Fire Department crews helped search for storm victims in Laurel and Pulaski counties after overnight storms damaged communities. Six Urban Search and Rescue firefighters went to Somerset—and three ambulance personnel plus a District Chief were deployed to London to support recovery efforts. LEX 18
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ The Kentucky softball team won an 11-0 game over USC Upstate on Saturday and then beat Northwestern 8-3, advancing to today's regional final. They will face the Clemson Tigers at 1 p.m.—if they win, they will play a rematch at 3:30 p.m. ABC 36
- ➤ On Saturday, Armando Rivera, a disabled wheelchair racing jockey, finished America’s Prettiest Half Marathon in Lexington in two hours and fifty minutes while handing out PDJF bracelets to raise awareness for disabled riders. He said he will keep racing to support the 60 injured jockeys helped by the PDJF—his journey began after a racing accident and overcoming addiction. ABC 36
