Good morning, Lexington. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 20th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local organizations have collected donations to help those affected by last Friday's tornadoes. Don Franklin dealerships take donations in 28 outlets — including Russell Springs, London, and Somerset—while Lexington Pet Pantry at Blue Stallion Brewing Company and Martin's Peterbilt also hold drives to support the community.  LEX 18

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A tornado this weekend killed 19 people across Laurel, Pulaski and Russell counties—17 in Laurel County including firefighter Major Leslie Roger Leatherman, one in Pulaski and one a woman in Russell—and left ten injured at UK Hospital in Lexington as emergency teams assessed damage to support federal aid.  ABC 36

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kentucky American Water filed a request with the Public Service Commission today to raise rates in order to cover more than $212 million in system upgrades—if approved, the average residential bill for households using 3,900 gallons a month may increase by about $9. The proposed rates will undergo public review, with hearings involving Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, before an interim rate is expected in about seven months and a final decision within 10 months.  The Lane Report
  • Green River Distilling Company will release its commemorative Army 250th Anniversary bourbon bottle on June 14 to honor the U.S. Army and its soldiers. The limited-edition bottle is bottled at 111.1 proof and will be sold at select retailers and military bases — a part of the proceeds will benefit programs for soldiers and their families.  The Lane Report

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Kentucky REALTORS released housing data for April that showed homes sold totaled $1.22 billion, with 4,057 transactions, a median price of $263,000, and 6,188 new listings. The report noted a 12.2% monthly gain in volume and a 9-day drop in market time — key signs of a strong market — which suggests active buyer and seller interest.  The Lane Report

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kenny Brooks got another commitment Sunday when 6-foot-5 Elsa Vadfors joined UK — the Swedish player from Uppsala Basket played in the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s EuroBasket and averaged 1.7 points and 2.8 rebounds.  ABC 36
