COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers from the American Red Cross are working in Laurel County to help tornado victims and provide shelter at First Baptist Church in London. More than 90 helpers from across the country have joined the effort and one volunteer from Arlington said he was inspired by past disasters and will stay on the ground until recovery is completed.  LEX 18
  • Airbnb.org is offering free temporary housing to Kentucky residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed by recent tornadoes. The nonprofit is partnering with United Way of Kentucky (which identifies those most in need) to fund and manage the stays.  LEX 18

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Kentucky firefighter Leslie Leatherman died while shielding his wife from flying debris when a powerful tornado struck his community in Laurel County—he was one of 19 people killed and his wife remains in critical condition at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital.  WUKY
  • A Laurel County man named David Krell was hurt in a tornado on Friday night and is now in the ICU at UK Hospital, with doctors saying he is paralyzed from the waist down and has broken bones in his back—neighbors found him after the storm while his family stays at a Lexington hotel for support.  LEX 18

CRIME NEWS

  • Lexington man Woodford Armitage, 70, was accused of animal cruelty when a Fayette County deputy saw him drag a medium-sized dog 50 feet from a moving car on May 20 near Limestone — he admitted driving without a license, registration or insurance and is set to appear in court Wednesday afternoon — while the dog's condition remains unknown.  FOX 56
  • Lexington man Woodford Armitage was arrested near North Limestone and York Street just before 7 p.m. Tuesday for allegedly dragging a dog 50 feet from a moving car — he now faces charges of second-degree animal cruelty, driving without a license, driving without a vehicle registration receipt and driving without insurance.  WKYT

  • The Dunbar boys’ tennis team beat Lexington Catholic 3-1 to win their 11th Region tournament championship while Dunbar freshman Evan Fomby won the singles title with scores of 6-3, 6-2—Britt Chandler was named Coach of the Year and Henry Clay player Max Hixson received the USTA Senior Sportsmanship Award.  Fayette County Public Schools
  • Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was named NBA’s MVP Wednesday after averaging 32.7 points, 6.4 assists, and 5 rebounds per game—he is the first former Kentucky player to earn the honor.  ABC 36
