CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested a 16-year-old on Thursday on charges including murder after officers responded around 8:45 p.m. last Wednesday to a stabbing on the 500 block of Douglas Avenue—67-year-old Freddie Richard Lynem Jr. was fatally wounded at UK Medical Center and two male suspects fled the scene.  WKYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lexington has unveiled plans to mark Juneteenth with six events on and around June 19. The celebrations include the 20th anniversary of its longest-running ceremony and a ribbon cutting at the restored Cadantown Rosenwald School — officials say the holiday is vital for honoring American history.  WUKY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Kentucky Board of Trustees began reviewing proposals for over $100 million in upgrades to UK Athletics facilities—plans include repairing Kroger Field, renovating suites and seating, improving sports sites, and designing an entertainment area to support future athlete pay.  WKYT

HEALTH NEWS

  • AVOL Kentucky, a local HIV testing center, will lose $200,000 in federal funding because of national budget cuts and now faces an indefinite pause on HIV prevention services—artist Wylie Caudill created a new Pride art piece called 'I Feel Lex' where 15% of each sale will help support the center.  WKYT

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Kentucky men’s basketball team will host North Carolina at Rupp Arena on Dec 2 as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge, and tip time and TV details will be announced later. The Tar Heels will visit Lexington for the first time since 2014—adding historic rivalry to the game.  LEX 18
