COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ NeCee Anderson, a former worker at an emergency shelter on West Third Street, said conditions for 18-to-24-year-olds were deplorable, with holes in walls, cracked floors, a crumbling retaining wall held by plastic sheeting, mold, broken glass, and only one working shower (run by Arbor Youth Services). City officials have referred the complaints to the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services and plan to increase oversight to improve the shelter (including better management and resources for youth). ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Lexington man Jonathon Thompson, 49, known for his kind smile and caring nature, died in a car crash on Boston Road on June 17—and his family, including his brother, sister, mother and longtime girlfriend, will hold a funeral early next week. LEX 18
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Brooks Houck was transferred to Warren County Regional Jail on Thursday — one week before his trial in the Crystal Rogers case, where Rogers went missing on July 5, 2015, and Joseph Lawson will be tried with him next week after Steven Lawson was found guilty on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and evidence tampering. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ A new monument entitled 'Towards Freedom' was unveiled Thursday morning to honor enslaved Lexingtonians Harriet and Lewis Hayden and celebrate their roles in advancing freedom, and it is on display at Lexington Traditional Magnet School on North Limestone Street. The sculpture by Basil Watson received a $245,000 contribution from the Public Arts Commission — a historic effort to acknowledge the city’s past and promote togetherness. WKYT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fayette County Public Schools is forming a budget solutions work group to review district finances and provide input on the upcoming 2025-26 budget and long-range priorities. The work group will hold meetings at 5:30 p.m. on June 25, July 15, and July 29 at The HILL—open to all interested Lexington residents. Fayette County Public Schools
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Health officials confirmed a harmful algal bloom at Paradise Camp on Herrington Lake and a second bloom near Tanyard Branch — also known as Redgate. Officials said people should avoid water contact while drinking water remains safe and the Division of Water continues monitoring conditions. LEX 18
