Good morning, Lexington. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 29th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Spark Community Cafe, a nonprofit restaurant on Main Street in Versailles since 2019, closed its doors as rising food costs forced the board to choose its mission to fight hunger over staying open — the cafe, which logged over 20,000 volunteer hours and served more than 90,000 meals, will now test new ways to help those in need.  LEX 18
  • The Juneteenth 5K run in Richmond brought the community together to celebrate freedom and raise funds for homelessness and nontraditional student scholarships while teaching local history along the trail — officials noted the turnout grew with participants of all ages and backgrounds.  LEX 18

CRIME NEWS

  • Lexington Police investigated a hit-and-run on the 900 block of Marcellus Drive around 6:15 p.m. Saturday— the driver fled the scene but was later arrested and charged while a child received care for non-life-threatening injuries at a hospital.  WKYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the Lexington Pride Festival, the Kentucky Marijuana Card team helped residents get educated about medical marijuana and even sign up for a card, with local attendee Jepika Lattimore explaining how the support helped her manage her cancer treatment. Medical marijuana has been legal in Kentucky since January 1 and the state may open its first dispensary in coming weeks (exact timing pending).  FOX 56

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Thursday afternoon, a thunderstorm at Kearney Hills Golf Links cut play short when heavy rain flooded fairways and damaged trees along the fence — a lightning strike on hole 16 left a mark on the grass. Maintenance crews worked over four hours to clear debris and the delay affected the Locker Room Cup tournament.  FOX 56
