Good morning, Lexington. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 30th of July.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A three-vehicle crash involving a semi on southbound I-75 near Newtown Pike occurred just before 7:45 a.m. today and sent one person to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries—two lanes remain closed for cleanup and drivers are urged to avoid the area.  ABC 36
  • A school bus hit a guardrail on Old Richmond Road between Evans Mill Road and S. Cleveland Road and blocked traffic in both directions — no passengers were on board and officials advise drivers to use I-75 with the Athens Boonesboro exit then S. Cleveland Road.  WKYT

CRIME NEWS

  • Lexington police arrested 22-year-old Da'Mond Smith on Monday on warrants including assault and terroristic threatening — officers worked with the ATF, FBI, and US Marshals Service to bring him into custody.  LEX 18

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country music icon John Michael Montgomery will give his final show at Rupp Arena on December 12 as part of his farewell tour, performing with his brother Eddie Montgomery, his son Walker Montgomery, plus his son-in-law Travis Denning. Tickets go on sale on August 1 online and at the Central Bank Center Box Office.  WKYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Summer vacation is ending and schools across central Kentucky will open on different dates starting August 4, prompting local parents to prepare back-to-school plans.  FOX 56

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UK Grain and Forage Center director Chad Lee said that corn in the Bluegrass region adds only a small amount of water—about 4,000 to 8,000 gallons per acre per day—since an acre of air already holds roughly 160,000 gallons. He explained that corn will not make neighborhoods more humid outside corn fields.  The Lane Report

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lexington firefighters wear heavy protective gear to battle fires and the heat—each set weighs 40 to 50 pounds and traps warmth, which can lead to heat exhaustion. City officials have activated the extreme heat plan—cooling stations are open, free Lextran rides are available, and waste collection starts earlier to help residents stay safe.  FOX 56

HEALTH NEWS

  • With most children set to return to school in the next two weeks, Lexington doctor Dr. Steve Davis urged parents to vaccinate their kids to prevent illness. The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department will work with Fayette County Public Schools and private providers—using a mobile van to remove obstacles—to ensure every child is protected.  FOX 56
  • On Monday, July 28, staff at Optimal Living Services in Lexington learned by meeting and letter that the recovery company would close its doors immediately, leaving them with one final paycheck and basic unemployment help. Peer Support Specialist Donnie Frye said the sudden shutdown may put clients at risk of relapse and force workers to help them find new programs — a challenge that adds stress to an already hard fight with addiction.  FOX 56

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bill Ransdell, a former UK quarterback and UK Athletics Hall of Fame member, discussed his record-setting college career from 1983 to 1986 (including a 9 to 3 season and a Hall of Fame Bowl win) and offered his outlook on the 2025 Wildcats. He recalled playing under coach Jerry Claiborne and attending a football camp led by then-Indiana coach Lee Corso.  WUKY
