- ➤ Lexington teen Rihana Walker lost her father to illness and her uncle to gun violence in 2022, which has led her to give food and hygiene kits to the homeless and raise funds for young Black girls as she enters her final year at Tates Creek High — she will work with local groups to expand her efforts. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Bryan Station High School dean John Bordas Jr. was indicted for alleged first-degree wanton endangerment after he reportedly pointed a gun at a motorist on February 13—he is scheduled for arraignment at 1 p.m. on August 29. FOX 56
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, Governor Andy Beshear announced on social media that the state's first medical cannabis dispensary in Beaver Dam, The Post Dispensary, is expected to open in the fall + officials say it will help Kentuckians with serious conditions access needed medicine. LEX 18
- ➤ Edelen Renewables submitted its proposal on Thursday to convert a 400-acre closed landfill into a solar farm that will produce 100,000 MWh of clean energy (enough to power roughly 5,300 homes and generate deep six-figure annual revenue for the city). The Urban County Council will review the proposal during a public comment period and if approved, the facility will be operational by the end of 2027 (supporting Lexington’s renewable energy efforts). HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A federal judge ruled this week that Planned Parenthood clinics will keep receiving Medicaid money despite a tax bill provision that aimed to cut payments for providers who received over $800K from Medicaid in 2023. In Kentucky, Planned Parenthood now offers health care services such as birth control care and screenings to one in three patients (a key Medicaid group). ABC 36
