ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A semi hauling gravel overturned on the I-75 southbound on-ramp from North Broadway—causing a large fuel spill that will require cleanup and prompting officials to close the ramp while urging drivers to take alternate routes.  WKYT
  • The Fayette County Coroner identified 47-year-old Charles T. Bowen as the victim of a fatal pedestrian crash on Liberty Road near Liberty Hill Drive at 10:45 p.m. on August 5—Bryce Daniel was arrested on DUI charges as Lexington Police continue to investigate.  ABC 36

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today marks the first day of school for Fayette County Public Schools — Lexington drivers are urged to slow down and take extra care as school buses, new high school drivers, and walking students add to busy roads, with police noting that delays may last for the first few weeks.  WKYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman urged health officials to ban bromazolam—designer Xanax—after it was linked to 47 overdose deaths and unscheduled drug sales; he said the ban would help law enforcement target traffickers and protect the community.  The Lane Report

  • WKYT and the Kentucky Blood Center are partnering on a blood drive to boost the summer supply at five locations. Tuesday donations ended at 6 p.m. while donation is available today from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.—donors receive treats from Chick-fil-A and Doughnut Days and enter a drawing for free groceries.  WKYT
  • Doctors at UK Markey Cancer Center used new equipment to diagnose and treat lung cancer in one visit, letting a patient with a 45-year smoking history have her cancer removed without waiting months and experts said the breakthrough care could save lives.  WUKY
