COMMUNITY NEWS

  • More than 60 Anderson County residents attended a church security training at Anderson Public Library on Thursday night to learn how to protect houses of worship in the wake of a Lexington church shooting that killed two people in July—Safety Reloaded Training and Consulting owner Nicholas Eckert led the session with a focus on situational awareness and de-escalation measures.  LEX 18
  • After a two-year closure, the Douglass Aquatic Center reopened—following a Thursday ribbon-cutting ceremony with Mayor Linda Gorton, city council members and Lexington Parks & Recreation. The redesigned center features the state's first wet bubble play feature, a basketball goal and other activities, costs $7 for adults and $5 for children 15 and under, and will remain open until September 1.  LEX 18

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Today, fairgoers at the Kentucky State Fair see progress on Kentucky Venues’ $460M transformation of the Kentucky Exposition Center, which began one year ago as Phase I—a $180M project featuring a 350,000-sf facility for multiple events. Construction of Phase II to add more exhibit space and amenities will follow, with major events planned for 2027.  The Lane Report

CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested Quavon Winslow after a six-month investigation into suspected drug trafficking led to his fleeing a Lexington traffic stop on August 19 — officers seized about 1.74 kilograms of fentanyl, 1 kilogram of meth and 24 ounces of ecstasy as he now faces multiple charges.  WKYT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, the Kentucky Chamber released two reports that show expanding affordable childcare could allow 16,000 to 28,000 parents to join or return to work and add up to $1.1 billion in new wages and tax revenues. The research also finds that up to 56,000 children may lack access to formal care—offering a data-based roadmap for state policymakers to address these shortfalls.  The Lane Report

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Beshear said four companies—Ford, GE Appliances, General Matter, and Apple—invested over $6.3 billion and created more than 1,000 full-time jobs in less than two weeks, marking a record economic boost for Kentucky. He added that these projects are part of the best economic growth period in the state.  The Lane Report
