- ➤ The 'Give 8/28 Lex' campaign returned Thursday — supporting 40 Black-serving nonprofits in Fayette County with matching funds and prizes — to drive donations during Black Philanthropy Month. Organizers held a kickoff press conference at the Old Fayette County Courthouse with Mayor Linda Gorton, and donations will be accepted online through midnight Thursday. ABC 36

- ➤ Lexington police confirmed a pedestrian was killed after being hit by a train late Wednesday night near Emmert Farm Lane in Lexington and said they are still investigating the incident. LEX 18
- ➤ Authorities convicted 41-year-old Keith Lamont Stallworth on multiple firearms and drug trafficking charges in Lexington after a downtown apartment search in August 2023 revealed drugs—meth, fentanyl, and cocaine—ammunition, and pistols converted for machine gun use. LEX 18

- ➤ Today, the University of Kentucky reached the halfway point in building its largest campus facility—marking a key milestone for the school. Construction will continue as scheduled with further updates expected soon. WKYT
- ➤ Fayette County Public Schools placed longtime budget officer Ann Sampson Grimes on paid leave on August 15 after she warned officials about needed budget cuts—attorney Brandon Voelker says the move was retaliatory and may involve discrimination. Voelker’s letter claims Grimes raised these issues in 2024 and 2025, but her advice was ignored. ABC 36
- ➤ Transylvania University welcomed the Class of 2029 on move-in day as families arrived early at 8 a.m. to complete check-in and new students began preparing for Welcome Week—events that will lead to classes starting Tuesday after Labor Day weekend. ABC 36

- ➤ On August 27— the Kentucky Chamber and the Kentucky Collaborative on Child Care presented new research and policy recommendations to the Interim Joint Committee on Families and Children, arguing that expanding childcare access could allow 16,000 to 28,000 parents to rejoin the workforce and add up to $1.1 billion in wages and tax revenue. Their proposals, drawn from three reports and 37 consensus recommendations, aim to guide lawmakers during the 2026 legislative session. The Lane Report
- ➤ Superintendent Liggins told the board on Aug. 28 that the district will balance the FY26 budget by freezing nonessential hiring and cutting district spending—measures expected to save at least $6 million, including exploring a sale of property.
