  • At Sayre Christian Village in Lexington, WWII veteran Jim Hellard celebrated his 100th birthday on Wednesday with a party that surprised him with a visit from a longtime friend from the war. He laughed as he said he felt about 75—enjoying a day filled with community warmth.  WKYT
  • A Lexington shelter is seeking foster homes and donations after rescuing two starving dogs from Manchester Sunday night. One dog—a doodle—needed a metal piece removed from its tooth after a local groomer spotted the issue.  ABC 36

  • Inszone Insurance Services has acquired Lexington Insurance Agency in Lexington, marking its entry into the Kentucky market—this deal will let clients access a wider range of insurance options while keeping a trusted local team.  The Lane Report

  • FLACA and Lexington Parks and Recreation will host Festival Latino de Lexington at the Robert F. Stephens Courthouse Plaza this weekend—Friday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 4 to 11 p.m.—to showcase Latino arts and culture.  WUKY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fayette County Public Schools named Shealynn Duvall, a Special Ed teacher at Tates Creek High School, the Kids’ Champion for September—Superintendent Demetrus Liggins surprised her at school today. The board of education will honor her at a meeting on Sept. 22.  Fayette County Public Schools
  • The Princeton Review’s Best Colleges guide ranked Transylvania University as one of the nation’s top schools, noting strong academics and active campus life—students praised the downtown Lexington location and high professional school acceptance rates. The guide was based on surveys of 170,000 students and highlighted that only about 15% of four-year schools were profiled.  The Lane Report
  • The Kentucky Student Success Collaborative awarded five $60,000 planning grants to public colleges to help support undergraduate students who are parenting. The nine-month improvement process will let each school develop affordable childcare options—ensuring that more parenting students can stay in school.  The Lane Report
  • At Eastern Kentucky University's College of Business, students learn to draft business plans, form LLCs, and pitch startups with hands-on support from faculty. Programs including Scholars Tank and E-Club offer practical training — preparing students to launch new ventures.  The Lane Report
  • Fayette County School Board approved an external audit of the school district's budget use in a 5-0 vote at a special-called meeting on Tuesday—Board Chair Tyler Murphy said the review will help ensure transparency as the district submits its final budget by September 30.  WUKY
