CRIME NEWS

  • Kentucky communities are mourning as 13-year-old Kennedi McWhorter—a talented softball player remembered by her coach Wes Coldiron—and her mother Kayla Blake were killed in a stabbing last Friday, while authorities arrested Joshua Cottrell and Rowan County schools provided grief counselors for affected students.  WKYT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Commerce Lexington will offer a free six-week Money Smart for Small Business course starting Monday, October 6 at 5:30 p.m. at 330 E. Main Street—developed with the FDIC and SBA, it will teach planning, banking, and business management to aspiring and current owners.  The Lane Report

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Fayette County school board approved its working budget Monday night amid a $16 million shortfall and rising calls for Superintendent Liggins and Board Chair Murphy to resign. A special virtual audit meeting is set for today at 9:30 a.m.—a move to review the district’s finances.  ABC 36
  • On Monday night, the Fayette County Public Schools board voted 3-2 to finalize an $827 million fiscal year budget required by state law by September 30—ensuring a balanced result with no deficit. The board achieved cost savings with staff reductions, and Superintendent Liggins will return with a plan to restore the district’s low contingency fund.  WUKY
  • Lawmakers called for FCPS Superintendent Dr. Demetrus Liggins and Board Chair Tyler Murphy to resign—alleging that lavish spending and misleading budget details have harmed public trust in the district. In response, Liggins defended the schools' academic success while Murphy said he welcomes further dialogue as independent reviews are underway.  WUKY
  • Fayette County Board Chair Tyler Murphy explained that at the September 16th meeting, the board voted to have an external audit conducted by a committee of local financial professionals—this process will review FCPS's budget, operations, and transparency before any conclusions are reached. He stressed that the audit will help ensure the board makes decisions that support students and meet community expectations.  WKYT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rupp Arena at Central Bank Center joined GOAL—an organization that helps live event venues work together on green practices—to reduce its energy use and waste. General Manager Brian Sipe said the arena in Lexington is the first in Kentucky to join this effort and has already made upgrades like installing LED lighting and water-saving fixtures.  The Lane Report

  • UK College of Nursing’s BH WELL research team has launched The Dimensions, a free comic book series that uses eight superheroes to show real mental health challenges at UK.
