CRIME NEWS

  • ONE Lexington director Devine Carama said the community on East Seventh Street must come together after 19-year-old Ja’Zarion Robinson was fatally shot Tuesday evening—he noted that even with progress in reducing gun violence, each loss deeply hurts the neighborhood.  WKYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fayette County Public Schools' budget committee met Wednesday morning and voted to start an external audit of the district’s finances—reviewing revenue, expenditures, travel and event costs—to find the cause of the budget shortfall. Committee member Greg Hodge said the audit will use large data analysis to identify anomalies and guide next steps.  WKYT
  • Eastern Kentucky University researchers Dr. Lixun Su and Dr. Weiling Zhuang studied online reviews and found that subtle, implied negative comments have a stronger influence than clear, direct ones — a result that may help local businesses decide how to reply to reviews.  The Lane Report

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ben Geverdt, a UK forestry student and crew lead for the UK Fire Cats, said the team works with the KDF and U.S. Forest Service to fight wildfires during the current fall season—running from Oct.1 to Dec.15—and they built skills on wildland fires in Montana. The 18 member crew is ready to respond when needed.  The Lane Report

  • Kentucky lawmakers are split over Sen. Mitch McConnell's plan to lower THC limits in hemp products. Some representatives including Comer, Barr, Massie, and McGarvey say the new rules will hurt the hemp industry—McConnell argues the change will stop bad actors selling unsafe items.  WUKY
  • Today, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights found that the University of Kentucky violated the federal Civil Rights Act—officials have not yet commented on the finding.  WKYT
  • Kentucky is hosting a national conference in Lexington that shows its expanded address confidentiality program helps protect domestic violence victims - the state now allows safety measures without a judge’s order and works with other states to keep voter records secure.   • Today, the federal government shutdown began at midnight — flights continue to depart on schedule as TSA checkpoints operate normally.   • Kentucky leaders blamed each other after talks on funding failed, triggering a partial government shutdown that began Tuesday night.
