COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community organizations including 7th Street Community Church, ONE Lexington, and Community Action Council held a neighborhood walk on Thursday in East 7th Street after the murder of 19-year-old Ja'Zarion Robinson and distributed flyers for a vigil held today—emphasizing support for grieving families.  LEX 18

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Filmmaking students from Bluegrass Community and Technical College volunteered at the Twelve Lions Film Festival held at the historic Kentucky Theatre in downtown Lexington last weekend—assisting with event logistics and technical support. At the event, Lexington native Michael Shannon hosted a free master class and premiered his film Eric LaRue, offering the students hands-on experience.  The Lane Report
  • U.S. Congressman Andy Barr announced a $900,360 federal grant to the Kentucky Education Development Corporation for its GEAR UP Elevate project (serving 12 districts and 27 schools) to boost academic performance and college readiness over the next seven years.  The Lane Report

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Kentucky Department of Corrections is expanding employment education programs to help people leaving prison boost skills and reduce reoffending. The state added 14 technical courses in prisons and plans to offer 26 by the end of the year — Governor Beshear said the 'Second Chances' program helps lower recidivism.  WUKY
  • Governor Andy Beshear announced yesterday that Natural State GreenGrass CannaCo, a Tier III cultivation facility in Madison County, was approved to begin operations for Kentucky’s medical cannabis program. The facility will eventually expand to 25,000 square feet to support safe access to treatment.  WKYT
  • State Senator Brandon Smith urged Governor Andy Beshear to sign a death warrant for death row inmate Ralph Baze, who was sentenced in 1994 for murdering two law enforcement officers—Kentucky has not executed an inmate since 2008 due to a review of lethal injection protocols, and Smith said this would bring closure to victims' families.  ABC 36

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medical cannabis could be available next month as over 14,530 cardholders wait for sales and a cultivator has completed its first harvest—while more than 70 state-approved businesses, including the first dispensary set up in Beaver Dam Inn, prepare to launch products. This shift follows legal changes earlier this year and promises to create new local job opportunities.  WKYT
  • The Kentucky Department for Public Health issued a statewide Health Alert after Lexington reported its fourth West Nile Virus case, with patients in high-risk zip codes requiring hospitalization. The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department sprayed affected neighborhoods — including 40502, 40505, and 40509 — and urged residents to use EPA-approved repellents and wear protective clothing.  ABC 36

SPORTS NEWS

  • Keeneland is starting its Fall Meet with eleven stakes races and a total purse of about $6.3 million today; fans will watch the $400,000 Phoenix Stakes and the Grade 1 Darley Alcibiades Stakes at 5:16 p.m.—Tommy Joe is the heavy morning-line favorite. The weekend also features top races on Saturday and Sunday that offer spots in the Breeders’ Cup events.  ABC 36
  • Today at 1 p.m., the 2025 Keeneland Fall Meet begins after 20 months of work that repositioned horse stalls and expanded the paddock viewing area with a new Winner’s Circle so fans can be closer to the action. Officials say a large new building with dining and a rooftop bar—serving as a modern entrance—will debut at the Spring Meet.  LEX 18
