- ➤ On Friday, the William Wells Brown Neighborhood Association held a free fall break cookout at William Wells Brown Elementary — a gathering meant to give local children and residents a moment of comfort after recent shootings, and organizers Robert Hodge and Vivian Hodge said the event supports ongoing youth programs during fall break. - ➤ A Lexington church will host a vigil in the east end to help the community cope with a violent week that included the death of a teenager—organizers say the event will offer support to residents. WKYT

- ➤ Fayette County Public Schools spent $38,000 on a contract to promote a failed tax increase without informing all board members, and board member Amanda Ferguson discovered the deal online—raising concerns over transparency amid multiple investigations and growing calls for leadership resignations. - ➤ Rosenwald-Dunbar fourth graders in Jessamine County are raising funds for an orphan care center in Malawi by forming Jessamine Cares—supported by local leaders and partners like Circle of Hope. - ➤ The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights found the University of Kentucky violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by hosting a conference limited to students of color through the nonprofit PhD Project—an organization that restricts participation based on race—and the university ended its relationship while agreeing to report future partnerships. - ➤ Shelia Binion had a lung nodule that grew during a follow-up scan and was diagnosed as Stage 1 lung cancer, so she underwent a minimally invasive robotic surgery using the Da Vinci SP system at UK HealthCare’s Chandler Hospital in July. She chose the procedure to lessen recovery time (reducing pain and shortening her hospital stay) and quickly returned home in Grayson. The Lane Report
