CULTURE NEWS

  • Miss Kentucky Ariana Rodriguez, who made history as the first former foster youth in the Top 11 at Miss America, now works to raise awareness for foster children during National Foster Youth Month. She started her organization (The Lucky Ones) after facing homelessness and hardships as a teen.  LEX 18

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy reported that Lexington’s average gas prices rose 16 cents per gallon last week—showing a cycle where prices jump and then fall—and Patrick De Haan advised drivers to wait a few days before filling up as prices are expected to drop further.  WKYT
  • Four Kentucky Powerball prizes worth over $1.1 million are unclaimed—one $1 million ticket from July 7 at Kroger on Starlite Drive in Owensboro and three $50,000 tickets from September draw have 180 days left to be claimed. A new $50,000 winner was sold at Thorntons on Preston Highway in Louisville.  LEX 18

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UK forestry students have begun working as Fire Cats—a paid role with the Kentucky Department of Forestry that has them on-call to fight wildfires from October through May. The program gives them real field training, specialized gear and valuable work ties.  LEX 18
  • Students at NKU can join the new INVENT program to gain hands-on skills in biotech, AI and advanced manufacturing — they will complete seven weeks of training before starting paid internships with local startups. The nearly $1M initiative backed by the National Science Foundation opens applications in October with placements slated for spring.  The Lane Report
  • Frederick Douglass High School & the University of Kentucky's College of Education have partnered for over three years to give students hands-on teaching workshops and one-on-one mentoring; later this semester, Douglass students will use the planned lessons in real classrooms.  Fayette County Public Schools

FINANCE NEWS

  • Huntington Bank selected Jim Danneman as Regional President for Southern Ohio/Kentucky, citing his more than 30 years of banking experience and proven leadership. He will lead nearly 50 branches and 800 colleagues while expanding business and community ties in the region.  The Lane Report

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than $1.2 million in recently awarded Kentucky Powerball prizes remain unclaimed, including a $1 million ticket from Owensboro and four additional $50,000 prizes from draws in London, Lebanon, and Louisville — winners must claim their prizes within 180 days at the lottery headquarters.  WKYT
  • London Mayor Randall Weddle is calling for Councilmember Justin Young’s resignation or impeachment after a council meeting lacking quorum allowed public comments on Young’s use of a racial slur and his domestic violence arrest last month—Young later apologized in a statement.  LEX 18
  • Amy McGrath announced on Monday morning on X that she is running for the U.S. Senate in Kentucky again—she lost her 2020 race to Mitch McConnell and now plans her second campaign.  LEX 18

  • Tom LeCompte has flown with Air Evac Lifeteam for over 21 years and has completed more than 2,500 patient flights, joining an elite 2% of pilots while he plans to retire within five years — his team provides critical emergency care across the region.  LEX 18
