COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lexington resident Lavina Baxter will be honored Saturday night with the Legacy Award at a Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraiser—recognizing her 53-year mentorship that began in Lexington and helped her mentee Juanita Golden become her family's first college graduate.  LEX 18
  • The East High Street YMCA, which has served Lexington for over 60 years, will be sold to a Florida firm planning to turn the building into student housing—prompting local residents to protest the loss of their cherished community space.  LEX 18

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Maya Davis, a recent graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, was named one of 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars and now attends Stanford University—she is one of two Kentucky students to earn the honor. Her teacher Scot Gill was named a Distinguished Teacher while Davis participated in the school’s Math, Science and Technology Center program and helped launch the Astronomy Club.  Fayette County Public Schools
  • A Fayette County elementary school made sure a student in the hospital felt connected by including her in class activities with a special program that brings her into the classroom from a distance.  WKYT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy rain has flooded Bermuda Avenue and other roads today, and officials urge drivers to slow down and steer clear of water — a few inches can stall a car. The ABC36 Weather Team will continue tracking the conditions as the downpours persist.  ABC 36

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fayette County Public Schools’ new Rise STEM Academy for Girls construction left neighbors upset as tree removal caused flooding in their yards, with some already filing a lawsuit over eminent domain fears—FCPS said it is working with contractors to address the issue and will remediate affected homes as it continues its project.  WKYT
  • The Fayette County Clerk’s Office at 162 East Main Street will close to the public for renovations at noon on November 6 + the Elections Department will stay open for candidate filings on November 6, 7, and 10 while the nearby Helix parking garage is closed for resurfacing; the office will reopen on November 12 at 8 a.m.  ABC 36
  • Lexington city officials are seeking input on downtown master plans—residents will soon have the opportunity to share ideas at upcoming public meetings. This feedback will help shape future developments in the area.  WKYT
  • Following his third DUI arrest on Oct. 7—Robertson County Sheriff Terry Gray was asked to resign by Gov. Beshear, who cited his previous DUI arrests in December 2023 and October 2024 as neglect of duty.  LEX 18

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kentucky Children's Hospital is displaying murals of Peanuts characters to bring joy and healing to patients in a designated play zone—where children and staff can relax and have fun. The murals are part of a global hospital program that helps young patients like eight-year-old Layton enjoy playtime during recovery.  LEX 18

  • On Tuesday afternoon, the Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball schedule was released—showing game times, TV details, and upcoming opponents from October 24 to March 7. The schedule gives fans clear guidance on the season’s future matchups.  ABC 36
