  • La Unica Mexican Grocery—a staple in Cardinal Valley for 35 years—will close its doors this week when the lease expires. Owner Juan Esparza said the family now prepares for its next chapter while cherishing the community ties built over decades.  LEX 18
  • A Central Kentucky CBD business announced it will close its location soon — the company did not provide details on the closing timeline or reasons.  WKYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Support for the Pre-K for All initiative has grown after more than 40 outreach events where nearly 90 percent of participants backed extra preschool funding and access, according to the Beshear administration. Since June, 60,000 Kentuckians have written to legislators and the Kentucky Association of School Superintendents has endorsed the plan — pushing leaders to invest in early childhood education.  WUKY
  • Kentucky writer and teacher Gurney Norman died at 88, and many former students and colleagues shared kind words about his life work. He led the University of Kentucky Creative Writing Program — teaching and inspiring a love for Appalachian culture.  WUKY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has directed displaced federal employees to use state resources during a federal shutdown that has entered its 13th day — the dedicated portal offers job search tools, career counseling, and unemployment benefit links, and it can be reached at 502-564-8030 or via email for those in need.  LEX 18
  • Fayette County emergency management upgraded LEXALERTS to new Regroup software Monday morning to give residents more control over alerts (including weather, health and community notifications) and an easier sign-up process (offering texts, emails, phone calls, and assisted listening options) to help keep locals safe.  WKYT
  • Gov. Beshear will travel to the United Kingdom, Ireland, and France to meet with over 45 companies—16 of which already work in Kentucky—to boost job growth and attract up to 2,900 new jobs and over $3.5 billion in investment. He will also talk with trade officials to help local businesses face new tariff challenges.  WUKY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Katie Eddington, a 16-year-old from Scott County, marked the 12th anniversary of her life-changing accident by donating blood today on her annual 'Katie Gives Back Blood Drive' organized by the Kentucky Blood Center—she plans to expand the drive to Scott County High School next year to involve more students.  LEX 18
  • Kentucky Children’s Hospital was awarded $2.5 million from the Kentucky Pediatric Cancer Research Trust Fund to hire researchers and develop treatments that lower risks for children with cancer. The grant will support studies in areas such as cancer genetics, prevention, and treatment — efforts that aim to reduce the cancer burden in Central and Eastern Kentucky.  The Lane Report
  • On October 10th, a pickleball player collapsed at a local court and was revived by a nearby AED—quick action helped save the player's life.  WKYT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Lafayette beat Lexington Catholic 4-0 for the 43rd District boys title while Henry Clay won 2-1 over Bryan Station for the 42nd District title; in girls, Paul Laurence Dunbar defeated Lexington Catholic 1-0 and Henry Clay edged Frederick Douglass 3-2 to claim their district wins—all teams now advance to the 11th Region tournaments.  Fayette County Public Schools
  • Kentucky held its annual Big Blue Madness last Saturday at Rupp Arena, where about 20,000 fans watched UK men’s and women’s teams compete in contests for three-point shooting, dunks and skills.
